Looking beneath the canopy.
Field note 002 / A repeatable route through a woodland.
Choose a route you can walk again.
In this sample visit, the route follows three easily recognized points: the edge of a clearing, a large tree, and the bend in a path. Each becomes a place to stop, look, and take a photograph.
The record includes the conditions on the day. A photograph made in rain tells a different story from one made in bright afternoon light.
Make room for the small observations.
Look beneath the broad view of the canopy. Note the ground cover, patches of bare soil, and places where people pass through.
The notebook leaves space for unanswered questions. Those questions help shape the next visit without turning a single observation into a conclusion.
